Colleyville-raised singer dove rd starts a new chapter with debut single ‘Fantasy’
A late-night drive home gave one North Texas singer his new name. The artist, who goes by Jordy, was driving down a road near his house when it hit him: Dove Road. According to the Dallas Observer, a few days later he opened his Bible to Matthew 3:16, where the Spirit of God descends "like a dove," and the coincidence started to feel like it meant something.
Now performing as dove rd, the Dallas-born R&B/pop singer released his first single, "Fantasy," on Sept. 18. The Observer calls it a breakup song. It opens on acoustic guitar before the drums come in. "'Fantasy' means a lot to me because it represents both heartbreak and rebirth," he told the Observer. "It's my first single as dove rd, so it marks a new beginning for me as an artist."
He was born in Dallas and raised in Hurst before his family moved to Colleyville. His aunts were church vocalists, and they taught him how to sing. The Observer says you can hear those Sunday mornings in the stacked vocals on "Fantasy." He grew up around the crew from Crown the Empire, the post-hardcore band that also formed in Colleyville.
He got back to music by a roundabout path that included a stretch living in Sydney, Australia. Sydney inspired his first stage name, "Since Syd," which he now admits was "cheesy." He says he treats his songs like journal entries about love, heartbreak, family, faith and nostalgia, and he hopes listeners will find pieces of themselves in them.
"Fantasy" is out now on all major streaming platforms.
